What will you do if your parents left you out of their will? Joshua 13 almost seems like the reading of a will, but one child is without inheritance. In verse 14, we see that the Levites do not receive any inheritance. Their life depends on the offerings that people bring to the temple of God. Imagine how you would feel if your future depended on the behavior of other people? What will you do if your ability to pay your bills or put food on the table hinged on what other people gave? It almost seems like a hopeless situation until we come to verse 33.
In verse 33, we learn that the Lord is the Levites’ inheritance. Imagine that! Their life does not depend on the behavior of people because God holds their future in His hands. God has taken it upon Himself to pay their bills and put food on their table!
You may not realize this, but God has called all of us who love Jesus to live like the Levites. We who have a relationship with Jesus as our God and Father are God’s royal priests (1 Peter 2:9). Our purpose is to show others the goodness of God so that they too can come out of darkness into God’s marvelous light (1 Peter 2:9). When we intentionally discharge our priestly duty, we can rely on no one but God. And God will take care of us, just like He took care of the Levites.
