Why Should I Obey God?

If you have ever wondered why you should obey God, Deuteronomy 4 gives you two reasons. But before we look at these two reasons, remember that the precursor to obeying God is trusting God.

The first reason for obeying God is found in verse 1, “so that you may live.” The absolute fulness of life belongs to God. In John 10:10 Jesus said, “I have come so that you may have life and may have it abundantly.” When we are living on this earth, we have this abundant life, during difficult times and enjoyable days, when we walk in obedience.

The second reason is given in verse 6, “it will show your wisdom and understanding to the nations.” Jesus tells us that we are “the light of the world” (Matthew 5:14). When we trust God, His Holy Spirit guides us in wisdom and understanding to know what is true (John 16:13). He also empowers us to live in truth. Then those around us who do not know God see our wisdom and understanding to do what is right, and they recognize God’s presence in us.

Simply put, obeying God brings fulfillment to us and enables others around us to see God living in us.
